THE BIGGEST MOVIE EVENT IN KERALA UJALA ASIANET ~* FILM AWARDS 2008 *~ The tenth Ujala Asianet Film Awards were given away at a glitzy ceremony. he 2008 Ujala Asianet Film Awards were given away at a glittering ceremony at Chadrasekharan Nair Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. Celebrities from different walks of life, film stars, directors and veterans of the film field attended the function. Madhu, Sukumari, Jackie Shroff, Ambika, Maneka, Nadia Moithu, Devan, Jagdish, Shari, Vindhuja Menon, Meera Vasudev, Swetha Menon and Nithya Das were among the guests who graced the function. The winners Asianet vice-chairman and managing director K. Madhavan gave away the Lifetime Achievement Award to Sheela. Sreenivasan and Mukesh, producers of 'Kathaparayumbol,' won the award for the best film. While Lal Jose bagged the award for the best director ('Arabikatha'), Mamootty was selected as the best actor and Meera Jasmine as the best actress. Incidentally, Meera has won the award for a record fourth time. Mohanlal walked away with the award for the most popular actor while Jagathy Srikumar and KPAC Lalitha won the awards for the best supporting actors. Versatile actor and comedian-turned-villain Kalabhavan Mani won the award for the best negative role while Suraj Venjaramoodu was adjudged the best comedian. Babu Thiruvilla and Nedumudi Venu shared the award for the best scenarist for their sensitive story of 'Thaniye'. In the music department, M. Jayachandran, Anil Panachooran, Madhu Balakrishnan and K.S. Chitra won the awards for the best music director, best lyricist and best playback singers respectively. Ganapathy, who immortalised his role in 'Vinodayatra' won the award for the best child actor. Renjith Menon and Lakshmi Rai won the awards for best debutants. Manoj Pillai and Narayan bagged the awards for best cinematographer and editor respectively. In addition, awards were also given to the best screen pair of Vinu Mohan and Bhama while Vimala Menon was given a special jury award. A melange of dance and music programmes and comic skits were staged in connection with the ceremony. Lakshmi Gopalaswamy, Jyothirmayi, Roma, Isha Sharvani and contestants of Vodafone Thakadhimi, a reality show in Asianet, put up scintillating dance numbers. Balabhaskar's fusion music was followed by rocking numbers belted out by Usha Uthup, Zubeen Garg, Navin, Swetha, Vidhu Pratap, Markose and contestants of Idea Star Singer, a talent hunt on Asianet. Suraj Venjaarmoodu, Salim Kumar, Jaffer and Yusuf put up a variety of skits that tickled the funny bone of the audience.
